As the holiday season draws near, planning your festive menu undoubtedly includes that essential, comforting element: gravy. And if you’re looking for a show-stopping, plant-based option that delights everyone at the table, look no further than this extraordinary Vegan Mushroom Gravy. I can attest, my husband, who is quite the gravy connoisseur, declared this the most flavorful gravy he’s ever tasted, pouring it over everything for days until the batch was completely gone. I assure you, his praise is entirely unsolicited!
You might find yourself echoing his sentiments as you savor each bite of this incredibly rich and creamy vegan mushroom gravy. It’s not just a side; it’s a centerpiece of flavor that will transform your holiday spread or any weeknight meal into something truly special.

Why This Vegan Mushroom Gravy is a Must-Make This Holiday Season
I’m putting the finishing touches on my holiday recipe collection for you, and honestly, it wouldn’t be complete without this spectacular vegan gravy. We’ve made large batches of this recipe numerous times, and each time, it disappears remarkably fast. The reason is simple: it’s ridiculously tasty, effortlessly creamy, and bursts with a deep, savory umami flavor that is hard to beat. Beyond its incredible taste, this gravy offers a few compelling advantages that make it perfect for any occasion, especially for gatherings where dietary needs can vary.
What makes this particular gravy so special? It’s the harmonious blend of earthy mushrooms, aromatic herbs, and simple, wholesome ingredients. Plus, it’s surprisingly easy to prepare. You essentially combine all the ingredients in a single pan and allow them to simmer and meld into a rich, luscious sauce. For that ultimate smooth and creamy texture, I rely on my favorite Silk Almondmilk. It’s the secret ingredient that achieves a luxurious consistency without any dairy, making this gravy 100% vegan and gluten-free.
Silk Almondmilk not only contributes to the gravy’s perfect texture and flavor but also helps keep the calorie count lower compared to traditional gravies made with heavy cream. This means you can serve this delightful gravy to all your guests, regardless of dietary restrictions, and everyone can enjoy a guilt-free indulgence. Flavor, convenience, and suitability for all – that’s a triple win in my cookbook!

Embrace Guilt-Free Feasting: Smart Holiday Swaps
Speaking of keeping calories in check and savoring every moment of the holiday feast without guilt, don’t we all wish for that? I’ve definitely moved past that uncomfortable feeling of remorse after a magnificent meal. Instead, I focus on making simple, yet impactful, ingredient swaps that keep the guilt low and the smiles, along with happy sighs, high. Here are some of my go-to holiday hacks:
1. Dairy-Free Milks for Creamy Dishes
Opt for almond milk, cashew milk, or even coconut milk/cream instead of heavy cream or whole milk. In terms of creaminess, I honestly haven’t noticed a significant difference, and these plant-based alternatives keep you just as satisfied. This swap makes a huge difference in everything from your stuffing to your cornbread and, of course, this incredible vegan mushroom gravy!
2. Savory Sweet Potatoes Over Candied Yams
While candied yams are a holiday classic, they often come loaded with excessive sugar. For a healthier yet equally delicious option, choose sweet potatoes prepared with more natural sweeteners. Even better, I make a skinny vegan sweet potato casserole that delivers all the incredible flavor without the guilt. I even use my favorite Silk Almondmilk in this recipe to maintain its creamy texture and rich taste.
3. Homemade Gravy vs. Packaged Alternatives
This recipe is a prime example! Choosing homemade gravy over a packaged version is one of the easiest and most impactful swaps you can make. Gravy is poured over almost everything during a holiday meal, so knowing you’re enjoying a version made with fresh, wholesome ingredients that tastes just as delicious (if not more so!) is incredibly satisfying. It allows you to control the sodium and additives, making for a healthier and fresher experience.
4. Gluten-Free Flours for Better Baking
When it comes to holiday baking and thickening sauces, I love using gluten-free flours like quinoa flour or coconut flour. They perform beautifully and taste remarkably similar to traditional flours. In this gravy, I used coconut flour, and I’m convinced it deepened the flavor profile. Those mouth-watering biscuits you see in these pictures? They were made using quinoa flour and were absolutely delicious! These alternatives open up a world of possibilities for those with gluten sensitivities without sacrificing taste or texture.
5. Divine Desserts with Simple Swaps
Finally, your dessert can still be utterly divine with just a few mindful swaps. Instead of white sugar, consider using unrefined cane sugar, coconut sugar, or even maple syrup in your sweet treats. These alternatives often bring a more complex flavor profile along with their sweetness. Additionally, swap out regular canned whipped cream for a homemade coconut whipped cream. It’s surprisingly easy to make and adds a light, dairy-free topping that perfectly complements any dessert. Otherwise, go ahead and enjoy every delightful bite of your holiday spread!

Making Your Best Vegan Mushroom Gravy: Tips & Tricks
Creating this rich and savory vegan mushroom gravy is incredibly straightforward, but a few tips can ensure it turns out perfectly every time. Remember to chop your mushrooms and onions finely for the best texture in your gravy – this allows them to integrate seamlessly and release their flavors more efficiently. Don’t rush the initial sautéing step; allowing the vegetables to soften and brown slightly develops a deeper umami base. When adding the flour, let it cook for a couple of minutes to create a roux, which eliminates any raw flour taste and helps with thickening. Finally, be patient as the gravy simmers; it will thicken beautifully as it cooks, creating that luxurious consistency we all crave. This simple process yields a flavor-packed gravy that’s ready to impress!
Serving Suggestions for Your Perfect Gravy
This versatile vegan mushroom gravy is truly perfect for almost any savory dish. It’s an absolute game-changer for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, drizzled generously over mashed potatoes, stuffing, biscuits, or even a vegan roast. Beyond the holidays, it elevates everyday meals like veggie burgers, lentil loaves, or roasted vegetables. Imagine it smothered over crispy potato wedges or used as a base for a comforting shepherd’s pie. Its rich, earthy flavor and smooth consistency make it a universal enhancer for countless dishes, ensuring every bite is packed with deliciousness.
Storage and Reheating Made Easy
One fantastic feature of this vegan mushroom gravy is how well it stores. If you find yourself with leftovers, or if you prefer to make it ahead of time, simply store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. As with most gravies, it will naturally thicken quite a bit as it cools. Don’t worry, this is completely normal! To bring it back to its perfect, pourable consistency, gently reheat it on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, or warm it in the microwave. If it’s still too thick for your liking, you can always add a splash of vegetable broth or Silk Almondmilk until it reaches your desired consistency. This makes it an ideal make-ahead component for busy holiday meal prep.

Ingredients
Vegan Mushroom Gravy
- 1/2 tablespoon olive or coconut oil
- 1 cup mushrooms, chopped finely
- 1/2 onion, diced finely
- 4 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
- 2 tablespoons all purpose gluten free flour mix, I use coconut flour
- 1 3/4 cup vegetable broth
- 1/2 cup Silk Almondmilk
- 1 teaspoon liquid aminos or gluten free soy sauce, optional, but adds a lot of flavour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
Vegan Mushroom Gravy
- In a pan over medium-high heat, heat the oil.
- Add the chopped mushrooms, onions, minced garlic, and thyme to the pan. Stir together and allow to cook until onions are translucent and mushrooms have softened slightly and released their juices, about 10 minutes.
- Add in the flour for 2 minutes, allowing it to brown slightly, then stir it thoroughly with the ingredients.
- Add the vegetable broth and Silk Almondmilk, stir well, and increase heat to medium-high. Allow everything to simmer together until it’s thickened, stirring occasionally, about 2 to 4 minutes. Add the liquid aminos at this point if using, as they add significant depth of flavor. Remove from heat. Add salt and ground black pepper to taste if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- This recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary needs.
- We’ve observed that this gravy, like many others, tends to thicken considerably once it cools. A quick reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop will bring it right back to its perfect, pourable consistency. If you plan to make this gravy ahead of time for your holiday table, simply keep this in mind before serving.
