By the way, if you’re joining the 7-Day Smoothie Challenge, happy Day 1! While summer officially kicked off in June, July has always been the month that truly signals its vibrant arrival for me. Perhaps it’s the lingering daylight late into the evenings, the anticipation of our upcoming anniversary celebrations, or the final preparations for long-awaited travel plans – whatever the reason, July embodies the spirit of summer! This year, I’m making a conscious effort to rekindle the carefree joy I felt during summer vacations as a teenager, weaving it into the fabric of everyday adult life. Summer should be a special, rejuvenating time for everyone.
You might have noticed a recurring theme of happiness in my recent posts, and there’s a deeply personal reason for it. While I’ve always understood the importance of happiness in my life, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I began to actively and intentionally pursue it with a renewed vigor unlike ever before.
It all stemmed from a simple, yet profound, question my husband, the Mr., posed to me – a question that completely reshaped my perspective and goals for the year.
The Mr. is an avid reader, consuming books and articles at a rate far exceeding my own (and I consider myself quite a reader!). He stumbled upon a powerful question within a motivational online story, one that unexpectedly challenged and redefined the direction of my aspirations for this year. This wasn’t just another casual inquiry; it struck a chord deep within me.
What do you need in this life to make you truly happy?
Seriously, take a moment. Pause, find a quiet space, and genuinely reflect: “WHAT in this life, do I NEED, to make ME, truly HAPPY?” What thoughts immediately surface? Resist the urge to Google this question, as that will only present you with what others believe constitutes happiness. In these moments of introspection, the goal isn’t to tell yourself what you need, but rather to truly hear what you need from within. It requires a quiet mind, a willingness to listen to your inner self. I know it might sound a bit unconventional, but I assure you, this internal dialogue is incredibly powerful. I’ve always understood that generic declarations like “money and a stable career” don’t inherently bring me personal happiness (and if they genuinely bring you joy, that is absolutely wonderful and valid!). However, I realized that having sufficient funds to explore the world, and cultivating my business to a point where such adventures become consistently achievable – *that* truly aligns with my definition of happiness.
What captivated me about the author’s approach in that online story was his emphasis on making the list entirely your own. It’s perfectly fine if owning a beautiful car makes your personal happiness list; after all, it’s *your* list. The key is to ensure that each item genuinely stems from what your heart knows you need for happiness, rather than succumbing to external pressures or societal expectations. Once you’ve compiled your list, consider vocalizing it. Keep a digital copy on your phone to review frequently, or print it out and place it somewhere private – or public, if you feel inspired to share. The act of manifesting this list into your life is transformative. You’ll soon find yourself consciously examining your daily choices, gradually aligning your thoughts, beliefs, and actions to actively achieve the aspirations on this list. It sounds almost magical, doesn’t it? Well, ever since I immersed myself in Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic”, my belief in the power of intention and manifestation has only deepened.
So, taking the author’s advice, I embarked on creating my own happiness list. He cautioned that the initial draft might be extensive, filled with things we *think* would bring us joy. But, he assured, through careful reflection, we would gradually refine it to encompass what our heart truly knows. And let me tell you, sharing this is a bit scary! However, since the creation of this list, which I personally view as a dynamic life vision board, I’ve observed a remarkable shift in my approach to numerous aspects of my life. It has become a compass, guiding my decisions and fostering a more intentional pursuit of joy.

This list isn’t static; it evolves with me daily, serving as an authentic reflection of what truly contributes to my happiness and well-being. It’s a living document, growing and adapting as I discover new layers of joy and fulfillment.
Now, for the really exciting part! I recognized that to truly bring this happiness list to life, I needed to translate its essence into a tangible, activity-based format. And what better way to do that than with a bucket list? Summer, after all, is synonymous with fun and adventure, isn’t it? I honestly can’t recall the last time I consciously crafted a summer bucket list. So, I decided to merge my core happiness aspirations with the season’s vibrancy, creating a “Summer Happiness Bucket List” – a collection of activities I genuinely desire to experience this summer. The crucial caveat? Absolutely zero pressure to achieve every single item. The purpose is pure enjoyment and personal growth; these are things I know will enrich me, elevate my happiness, and enhance my overall life experience. Are you ready to see what’s on the list?


Embrace a Dedicated Self-Care Day
My mental health is paramount. Regular readers know I grapple with anxiety, and stress is certainly not a friend. Maintaining my meditation practice, engaging in daily prayer, and practicing yoga are not mere routines; they are fundamental pillars that complete my soul and bring me profound peace. I’m practically having a mini-dance party just writing this – the thought of a day dedicated solely to myself is exhilarating! I envision a day where I sip nourishing smoothies, indulge in yoga until my body feels utterly content, delve into an hour of deep meditation, and conclude with a beautiful, extended devotional. It’s a day to pause, breathe, and wholeheartedly say, “Thank you, Jessica, for all your hard work. You truly deserve this day off to rejuvenate and replenish your spirit.” This dedicated time allows for complete mental and emotional reset.
Embark on Inspiring Travels
When I express my love for traveling, I mean it with every fiber of my being. There is nothing quite like immersing myself in a new culture, absorbing its unique rhythms, flavors, and traditions. It is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite activity on earth. Ironically, we often don’t explore enough within our own beautiful Jamaica, so that’s something I’m actively working on too! Next weekend, we’ll be celebrating our anniversary with a special trip, and in August, our adventures will take us to London! This trip holds particular significance as it will be the very last time the legendary Usain Bolt competes professionally – a bittersweet moment, indeed. My entire family and I are going to be there, cheering him on! We visited London previously for the 2012 Olympics, and I simply cannot wait to return. I still vividly remember Le Pain Quotidien in Kensington as a personal favorite restaurant. While we’ll be focused on the races, I’d love your recommendations: what else should I absolutely experience in London when we’re not at the track?
Host a Memorable BBQ Gathering
The Mr. proudly bears the title of “Grill Master” in our home, and for good reason! While the grilling duties will certainly fall to his expert hands, I’m eagerly anticipating my role in crafting refreshing cocktails, baking delightful summer desserts, and preparing an array of tantalizing starters. We’ve hosted BBQs before, and the sheer amount of flavor infused into every dish makes us feel like royalty. The communal joy, the laughter, and the incredible food create such wonderful memories. Cultivate a Herb Garden and Decorative Flowers
Jessica, also known as “plant mommy,” is already nurturing a thriving herb garden and a selection of other delightful vegetables. However, my ambition this summer is not just to maintain these green friends, but to significantly enhance them by adding a vibrant array of decorative flowers. There’s something incredibly uplifting about being surrounded by blooming beauty. When I visit my parents’ house, I often stroll through their backyard and pluck a few fresh flowers; their garden is a spectacle of natural beauty, and I yearn to recreate that same feeling of serene abundance in my own home. The immense satisfaction that comes from growing something beautiful and useful from a tiny seed or sprout is truly unparalleled. It connects you to nature in a profound and rewarding way.
Dance with Utter Abandon
This particular item makes me smile because it was the very first thing that popped into my head when I started brainstorming. Just today, I put on some of my favorite throwback tunes – the kind of music that instantly transports you – and I simply danced. I danced until I was genuinely sweating, laughing out loud, and felt a slight ache in my joints from the sheer exertion and joy. It was incredibly liberating and SO MUCH FUN. The feeling of pure, unadulterated release was something I absolutely want to experience again, over and over. It’s a powerful reminder of how simple pleasures can bring immense happiness.
Explore a New Museum
I am a profound lover of museums. Art has a unique way of moving me, sometimes to the point of tears – I know, it sounds cliché, but it’s absolutely true! I believe that art, music, and all forms of creativity are intrinsically linked. I find immense inspiration in the works displayed, deeply appreciating the dedication, heart, soul, and love that an artist pours into a piece, which we then have the privilege of witnessing. We’re already planning to dedicate a full day in London to exploring a new museum, eager to discover fresh perspectives and be swept away by new artistic narratives. The quiet contemplation and intellectual stimulation of a museum visit is a form of self-care for my mind.
Witness the Sunrise with Intention
The Mr. and I have made it a point to wake up early to watch the sunrise a few times, and without fail, every single time leaves me smiling for hours afterwards. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to a breathtaking sunrise view just 20 minutes from our home, a tranquil spot where the world slowly awakens. This summer, I am determined to repeat this magical experience. There’s an unparalleled sense of peace and optimism that comes with greeting the new day as the sun paints the sky with its vibrant hues; it’s a gentle reminder of nature’s consistent beauty and the promise of a fresh start.
Indulge in a Glorious Sleep In
Oh my goodness! I honestly don’t think I’ve truly slept in late since my college days! My ultimate dream is a day where absolutely no alarm disrupts my slumber. Furthermore, I want the luxury of waking up naturally, becoming aware, and then having the freedom to simply choose to drift back to sleep again, purely because I can. I believe we all wholeheartedly deserve a morning like this occasionally – a wonderfully lazy day where rest is the only agenda. It’s about letting your body dictate its needs for rejuvenation, without the incessant demands of modern life.
Commit to Learning Something New Everyday
I unabashedly confess: I am a learning geek! I absolutely adore discovering new information, insights, and skills. This summer, my goal is to actively engage in learning something new every single day, whether it’s a fascinating fact, a new recipe, a concept from a book, or a skill from an online tutorial. I promise to keep you updated on what I’m watching, reading, and generally consuming in terms of knowledge and inspiration throughout the season! The pursuit of knowledge keeps the mind agile and life endlessly interesting.
Completely Unplug for a Full Day
Friends, can we collectively agree to make a day like this a priority? I know, deep down, that I desperately need a true technology detox. I’m making concrete plans to implement this day very, very soon. I’ve experienced the immense benefits of even just a few hours of unplugging – it feels absolutely amazing and incredibly liberating. So, I can only imagine the profound impact an entire day disconnected from screens would have! For those who find a full day daunting, remember you can do this in stages; that’s my initial approach. I cherish taking photos to capture memories and enjoy reading on my Kindle, but if I can switch my phone to airplane mode, completely bypassing all the social media madness and notifications, that alone would be a significant step towards digital peace.
Discover a New Farmer’s Market
This is another delightful item on my London itinerary! I have an immense passion for exploring local farmer’s markets, especially when traveling to different countries, states, or parishes. There’s a unique thrill in discovering new, exotic fruits, local produce, and artisanal goods that reflect the culture of the region. I’m genuinely excited to wander through a London farmer’s market, eager to see what unique culinary treasures and vibrant local flavors I’ll uncover. It’s a sensory experience that grounds you in the local community.
Set Up a Hammock and Simply Relax
Oh my goodness, I’ve had the pleasure of doing this before, and it is sheer, unadulterated bliss. The gentle sway, the fresh air, the feeling of being suspended in tranquility – it’s truly magical. If you don’t have a hammock or easy access to one, I believe you can still capture a similar feeling of profound bliss. Simply finding a comfortable spot on a lounge chair, a cozy sofa, or a beach lounge outside on a cool evening, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, can evoke that same sense of peace and absolute relaxation. It’s about creating an oasis of calm, even for a few hours.
Host an Engaging Games Night
I absolutely adore a lively games night! My younger brother, bless his competitive heart, has consistently beaten us at Monopoly for as long as I can remember. So, my aim isn’t even to win anymore; it’s purely about the experience. What I truly cherish is the infectious laughter, the playful banter, and the beautiful memories that are forged during these evenings. The camaraderie and shared fun are priceless. A gentle reminder for this one: make sure to put all cell phones aside! Fully immerse yourselves in the moment, fostering genuine connection and uninterrupted enjoyment.
Organize a Girls’ Night In Crepe Party
One of my dearest girlfriends just returned from a year living in France, and she’s promised to teach us how to make – and then treat us to – authentic crepes at our next girls’ night in. Well, I was completely sold at the word ‘crepes’! I’m honestly bursting with excitement just imagining this evening: all the fresh, colorful fruits, decadent hazelnut spreads, rich whipped cream, and every other delicious topping imaginable for a truly fun and indulgent night! We always start by saying we’ll put on a movie, but without fail, we end up diving into the deepest, most heartfelt conversations, often concluding the night laughing until tears stream down our faces. It’s these moments of genuine connection that are so precious. Any fantastic crepe topping ideas you’d recommend?
Go Swimming More Often
I absolutely love swimming! It’s an activity that brings me immense joy and a sense of freedom. I even competed in synchronized swimming during high school, which means I am incredibly comfortable and at home in the water. Despite this deep connection, I’ve only managed to go swimming once all year – just once! That’s simply not enough for someone who loves the water as much as I do. I am determined to carve out many more opportunities to swim this summer, to feel the cool embrace of the water, and to experience the refreshing physical and mental benefits it offers. It’s a fantastic way to both relax and energize.
